The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) reacts with bewilderment on the latest attacks on the Macedonian minority in Greece.
At the presentation of the first Greek-Macedonian dictionary in the “Foreign Press Association” in Athens organisers and guests saw an attack by thugs and agitators of the neo-fascist organisation “Hrissi Avgi”. The participants were insulted and threatened in the worst way possible. The attack can be seen at “YouTube” as video-recording. The attack lasted half an hour, until the police came in and the nationalists left the building.
In a letter to FUEN-member organisation “Rainbow”, of which chairman Pavlos Voskopoulos was also at the presentation, FUEN expresses its solidarity.
“With indignation and heavy hearted we saw the pictures of the attack during the presentation of the Greek-Macedonian dictionary. The presidium of FUEN condemns this violence and demands from the Greek government to stand up for its minorities and to end the nationalist agitation. We declare are solidarity with our member organisation and the whole Macedonian minority in Greece.”
In a second letter FUEN also addresses the Greek prime-minister Kostas Karamanlis and demands a clear statement in reaction to the act of violence. “With a clear signal of condemnation you would set a significant step that shows Greece as an important protagonist for European diversity and human rights.
Your willingness for dialogue would bring you a lot of respect and recognition in Europe. Greece as state is sovereign and will not loose sovereignty, but will gain in grandeur if it engages in dialogue with all its citizens also with its minorities”, the letter says.
