Why Flensburg?

The General Secretary of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) is located in Flensburg.

Why particularly in Flensburg?

When the FUEN was founded in 1949, it was normal practice for the Secretary General to be located at the domicile of the person holding this office. This is why FUEN Secretaries General Povl Skadegård (in office: 1952 - 1974) and Olav Meinhardt (in office: 1974 - 1982) operated the Secretary General's office in Copenhagen. Only when Hans Ronald Jørgensen (in office: 1982 - 1987) took over, did the Secretary General's office move to Flensburg. This is where FUEN has been registered at court as a society and recognised by the inland revenue as a non-profit-making organisation, consequently entitling it to issue certificates for donations.

The General Secretariat is located on Schiffbrücke near the Flensburg harbour directly behind the Museum of Shipping, nestled in the office townscape of the Danish minority in the Federal Republic of Germany, who maintain several secretary's bases and offices here.

Since June 1999 the FUEN-Secretariat is managed by Secretary General Frank Nickelsen - a North Schleswig German.
