BASIC RIGHT TO EDUCATION

At the 2006 FUEN-Conference in Bautzen, the Charter for the autochthonous national minorities
in Europe was passed. It guarantees 13 fundamental rights for autochthonous, national minorities/ethnic groups as an integral part of human rights.

Each year, the FUEN defines one of these fundamental rights. At this year’s FUEN-Conference 2007 in Tallinn the right to education was definied. The next fundamental right to be defined will be the right to information and media of one’s own.

Following up this year’s general definition of the right to education of autochthonous, national minorities/ethnic groups, it is necessary to examine the status of the right to education in the case of each minority.

Therefore, all minorities living in Germany and in its border regions are warmly invited to discuss the right to education considering specific aspects and backgrounds within a particular minority, to compare different education systems and, on this basis, to describe the status of the right to education, in order to deduce essential requirements to education for each minority.

We would like to thank the Prime Minister of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, Peter Harry Carstensen, for the financial support, which has made the conference possible.
